A New Era in IT: Cloud Computing Takes Center Stage

In the last several decades, a handful of innovations have fundamentally changed the way businesses and individuals use technology. The move from mainframes to client-server environments, the rise of the PC, the widespread embrace of ERP systems, the Internet – each of these have marked distinct periods of business transformation and major IT market shifts.

Today, as the era of cloud computing dawns, we stand at another such milestone. Like these other breakthroughs, cloud computing builds on previous innovations and is poised to alter how corporate IT groups deliver services and how end users access the tools and data they need to work productively. Industry analyst firm Gartner rated cloud computing its second most strategic technology for 2009, thanks largely to its ability “to minimize additional capital expenditures on data centers and infrastructure.” But if cloud computing were only about reducing IT costs, it wouldn’t be a truly transformative technology. Indeed, it promises success on both sides of the “do more with less” challenge faced by IT groups everywhere.

To date, CIO concerns about security have held down adoption rates. However, the barriers are falling. Gartner predicts annual growth of 26.5 percent in the cloud market through 2013. Enterprise need a carefully planned, highly strategic approach that points a clear and viable path around a few common challenges and to the full realization of cloud computing’s impressive value proposition. The bottom line for cloud computing is that the time is now and the benefits are real.
